novak and parker home appliance’s safety steps checklist offers homeowners fire prevention tips
after recent reports of catastrophic fires in naperville, lake villa and libertyville, illinois, novak and parker home appliance launched a new “do-it-yourself” simple safety steps checklist, offering homeowners strategies for fire prevention throughout the home.according to dan novak, president of novak and parker, “as we heat our homes when temperatures drop, the tightness or lack of air movement in the home – what I call the ‘tight home syndrome’ – has the potential for disaster. now is the time to inspect and perform some general appliance maintenance to be certain all household appliances are working properly.”novak continues, “sadly, the three recent fire tragedies in illinois point to the importance of appliance safety. all three fires, including the blaze in lake villa on new year’s eve, may have been prevented with simple upkeep in the home’s laundry room and kitchen.”all homeowners can make novak and parker’s simple safety steps part of their routine. they can keep this checklist as their regular appliance maintenance guide or utilize novak and parker’s professional inspection services, including range checks for gas leaks, proper gas connectors and shut-off valves if lack of proper tools or uncertainty occurs:1. make sure all gas appliances are working properly and there are no gas leaks. If you smell gas, turn off the appliance and the shut-off valve. call the gas supply company or a professional repair company immediately.2. change any gas supply lines that are no longer approved for use in appliance installations. if your gas supply line is copper tubing, it should be changed to black pipe as soon as possible. If the gas supply line is a brass-corrugated line CHANGE IT IMMEDIATELY.3. never use a gas range or oven to heat your home.4. check and clean your dryer vent twice a year. clothing lint will build up inside the duct and can cause flash fires if not emptied. If you have a white, vinyl-corrugated dryer venting material, replace it immediately with either a rigid or semi-rigid metal duct.5. check and test all smoke alarms, replacing batteries annually.“oftentimes homeowners don’t make the time to complete regular inspections. safety is key – the simplest oversight can unfortunately turn fatal,” novak concludes.InTune Tips are provided by Michelle Blake.
