Create Your Own History: Consider Historic Venues for a Lasting Impression

Hotel ballrooms and restaurant banquet rooms are fine venues for just about any special event, from weddings and bar mitzvahs to the company holiday gathering. But to make an event truly special – even historic – consider history.

Consider one that by day houses masterworks of art and rare antiquities, the fossilized remains of a dinosaur or great volumes of research documents.  Or look into a room that’s normally a hub of transportation.  Or, reserve a gallery that once was the residence of a titan from Chicago’s past.

In a metropolitan area as large and diverse as Chicago, meeting planners can choose from a myriad of historic halls and rooms that surely will add a sense of drama that can make the event more exciting, memorable and unique.  In most instances, events must be booked at times when the venue is not open to the public, like evening hours and possibly weekends.  Most, however, are very flexible in terms of opening the space up to an intimate dinner for 30, or a grand reception for 3,000.

Here are some of Chicago’s most well-known, and perhaps not-so-well-known, historic event locations:

The Art Institute of Chicago and the Field Museum are decades-old, world-renowned cultural institutions and Chicago icons, visited by locals and out-of-towners.  Both offer tremendous venues, options and resources for special events at jut about any time of the year.   The Art Institute, for example, has four indoor locations that can accommodate from 150 to more than 900 attendees, and the outdoor McKinlock Court is open in the warm weather months.

Part of the lakefront museum campus, the Field Museum is home to Sue, the remains of a Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur that last walked the earth 67 million years ago.  The museum offers more than 35 world-renowned exhibition halls, ranging from Native American Halls and Inside Ancient Egypt to the great hall that houses Sue.

As the city’s oldest cultural institution, the Chicago History Museum is uniquely Chicago. The Museum creatively tells the story of the city’s vast and colorful past, creating a distinctive venue that you and your guests will remember. Spaces include reception, conference, and breakout rooms, as well as an auditorium and outdoor plaza.

Thousands of commuters think of Chicago’s Union Station in the West Loop as just a terminal where they can catch trains to and from the city.  Think again, because the 84-year-old behemoth structure (originally designed by legendary architect Daniel Burnham) is open for private events.  The 20,000 foot Great Hall, known for its dramatic ceiling and columns, is appropriate for large functions, while the smaller Union Gallery is ideal for more intimate receptions and meetings.
