Be Wise When You Optimize

There are hundreds of techniques you can do to optimize your website and increase your rankings on search engines. Two of the main ones have to do with how your site is programmed and the content on your site. Let's look at the programming first.

There are a lot of website designers out there, and you probably know at least one. There are not as many Search Engine Marketers or Optimizers, though, and you may not know one. These two professions are usually not one and the same, even though they should be. I would say that 95% of the designers I know can build a great looking site but don't know the first thing about optimization. This is a problem.

Websites are useless unless they are used! You can have a beautiful site built with all the bells and whistles but if you get minimal visitors and get little or no revenue it's a waste of cyberspace. There are many techniques to lean towards as well as many to completely avoid when building a site to make sure it's optimized. It is possible to actually block search engines from optimizing your site.

We are rebuilding a site right now for a company who spent $12,000 three years ago for an elaborate beautiful site.  Unfortunately the designer, although great at design, knew absolutely nothing about optimization and built the site using every bad technique out there. The business owner had no choice but to go to a professional SEO company to redo the site. The new one is not live yet, but I guarantee it won't be long before both the new and original site is paid for and he is profiting nicely from the site, as he should have been originally.

One of the other main techniques that assist in optimization is content. Each page on the site must have plentiful relevant content. Pretty pictures and a paragraph is just not enough. Research should be done to determine which keywords and keyword phrases should be focused on for the site in general, and for each specific page. There are many programs to help with this, but its best to consult a professional optimizer to be sure you are not wasting your time and money on keywords or phrases that you might not have a chance to be well optimized for.

Once it is determined which keywords and keyword phrases would be best to focus on, make sure each page has those words sprinkled in with as much relevance as possible, at least 3 or more times per page. This can be done on your own, but it is recommended to speak with a professional first to make sure you are headed in the right direction. If your site gets indexed by a search engine in the wrong way, it takes quite some time to fix it.
